Stephenville and Erath County are also rich in Texas History. A native of Vienna, Austria, George B. Erath came to America in 1832. He was an Indian fighter, surveyor, soldier at San Jacinto, Texas Ranger, Republic of Texas Congressman, member of the Texas Legislature and a Major in the Confederate Army. In 1855, Erath led a party of 30 pioneers into the territory now known as Erath County. John M. Stephen was among them. In that same year, the heirs of John Blair, who died at the Alamo, issued John M. Stephen a warranty deed for the property. Stephen made an agreement that he would donate land for construction of the county courthouse and several churches if the town was named Stephenville and designated as the county seat. In 1858, the population of Stephenville was estimated at 766. Stephenville’s crown jewel of education is Tarleton State University. Its founder, John Tarleton, died of typhoid fever in 1895. In his will, he left about $85,000 to establish a college in Stephenville. John Tarleton College was founded in 1899. Tarleton became a part of the Texas A & M University system in 1917 and gained official status as a university in 1973.

Tarleton’s enrollment is over 10,000 students. Tarleton offers 67 undergraduate and 22 graduate programs and a doctorate program in Education Administration. Degree curriculum includes Agriculture, Business Administration, Teacher Education, Allied Health, Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Physical and Biological Sciences, Humanities, Mathematics, and Technology. Stephenville’s ISD has an enrollment of 3,500 plus students.
